Cicada Publishing is a small independent publishing company dedicated to promoting diversity and representing underrepresented communities in the literary market. Our goal is to publish books that showcase the diverse voices and stories of individuals from all backgrounds. Through strategic marketing and distribution efforts, we aim to increase visibility and access to our publications, ultimately contributing to a more inclusive and diverse publishing industry.
Cicada Publishing is committed to amplifying the voices of underrepresented communities through the publication of authentic and compelling stories. We strive to provide a platform for diverse authors to share their experiences and perspectives, while also providing readers with access to a wide range of narratives that reflect the diversity of our world.
Cicada Publishing was started in 2024 by Karen Snyder and her daughter, Jennifer Asaro. Inspired by our family, we have dedicated ourselves to inclusivity and diversity, just like our family. We have family members that touch the spectrum of ethnic backgrounds that have been under-represented for years. In addition, our grandson/son is disabled and has struggled for years to find his place in a world that does not represent him. Although all of us are older, we feel it is our duty to try and change the landscape of publishing and entertainment to include perspectives of those we love whose voices are largely unheard. We have witnessed firsthand the impact of not having stories that those who are marginalized can connect to. What started as a conversation while walking on the beach has transformed into an amazing opportunity for us to publish books that feature different races and people with disabilities. We can do our part to fight against all “isms” and hope for a kinder world where everyone feels like they have a place.
Los Angeles-born and raised, Jennifer has devoted her entire career to the world of filmmaking. After a brief stint in Visual Effects, she smoothly transitioned to Finance in the early 2000s and never glanced back. She has held the position of VP of Feature Finance at Warner Bros. since 2017, giving her direct involvement in the creative process of feature films. This provides her with a special insight into the various aspects of this process, encompassing both design and business. Jennifer’s professional and personal experience has given her insight into the patterns of complex and classical storytelling. Jennifer’s commitment to life is also focused on caring for her disabled son. For over three decades, she has fought for her son and navigated the complexities of the medical system. Furthermore, she has championed many services and programs to enrich her son’s life, motivating her to create books that advocate for tolerance and inclusion among children on the spectrum, both in school and at home. Jennifer strives to provide an environment where her son feels safe, engaged, and independent. Right now, he is living in his own place!

In the latter part of her career, she focused on editing different documentary projects for television and film, resulting in a diverse and impressive portfolio.
